Reporting a bug
These help me find the problem quickly:
- Your iPhone model and iOS version (Settings › General › About).
- The CalcOwlator version, shown at the top of the app’s Settings.
- What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead.
- A screenshot or screen recording if you can. Cover or change any amounts you’d rather keep private.
- If a total looks wrong, the rows that feed it. Long-press the total and choose Show what feeds this, or share the list as text from its ⋯ menu.
Common questions
Where are my lists kept?
On your iPhone, in the app’s own storage. With CalcOwlator Pro you can also turn on iCloud sync, which keeps them in your own private iCloud. See the privacy policy.
How does iCloud sync work?
iCloud sync is part of Pro. Turn it on in the app’s Settings (the gear on the Lists screen) › iCloud sync. Your lists then stay the same on every device signed in to the same Apple Account, and come back when you set up a new phone.
- If the same list was changed on two devices before they caught up, the newer change wins.
- The status under the switch tells you what’s happening. “Sign in to iCloud in Settings to sync” means the iPhone isn’t signed in to iCloud; “Your iCloud storage is full” means iCloud has no room left.
- Sync now asks iCloud for changes straight away.
- Card photos stay on the iPhone they were taken on and are not synced.
How do I move my lists to a new phone without Pro?
In the app’s Settings, under Your lists, tap Export a backup. That makes one file with all your lists; save it to Files or send it to yourself. On the new phone, tap Restore from a backup and pick the file. Lists you already have aren’t duplicated.
How are amounts rounded? How many decimals are shown?
CalcOwlator does its sums in exact decimals, not binary floating point, and rounds only when it shows a number, half away from zero. So 1,977.075 shows as 1,977.08 at two decimal places.
Choose decimals for new lists in Settings › New lists: Automatic, None, 2 or 3. Each list can have its own in its list settings. Changing the decimals changes only how numbers are shown, never the amounts you typed.
Which currency does CalcOwlator use?
New lists start in your region’s currency. Change it for new lists in Settings › New lists (or choose None for plain numbers), and give any list its own currency in its list settings. Template sample amounts follow your currency.
CalcOwlator doesn’t look up exchange rates. With Pro, accounts can be in other currencies, each shown in its own.
How do I carry a list over to next month?
- In the list’s ⋯ menu, tap Start November Budget (it names the next month for you).
- Carry-over is on when something is left; it’s added as the first row, so it counts in the new month’s totals. Turn it off to start from zero.
- The new list has the same rows, sections and links, with ticks cleared. Rows marked only this month stay behind. Rows that send money to a goal send it again, as a new dated entry.
- The arrows at the top of a list move between months. You can also archive the old month as you start the new one.
How do I scan a receipt, bill or barcode?
In a list, tap Scan, then Scan a receipt or bill, Scan barcodes or QR codes or Choose a photo.
- Receipts: hold the receipt flat in good light, then check the items. A warning shows if they don’t add up to the printed total. Add the receipt as one row with the items in its note, or, with Pro, each item as its own row sorted into your sections.
- Bills: the amount and due date fill in, so the reminder is set too. If the list already has a row for that bill, Update changes its amount and due day.
- Barcodes and QR codes: the first time, type the item’s name and price; next time it adds itself. A payment QR code fills in who you paid and how much.
Everything is read on your iPhone with on-device text recognition. Nothing is uploaded.
How do I lock CalcOwlator with Face ID?
In the app’s Settings, under Privacy, turn on Lock with Face ID (on an iPhone without Face ID it says Touch ID or Passcode). Then choose when it locks after you leave: immediately, after 1 minute or after 5 minutes.
While the lock is on, your numbers are hidden in the app switcher and widgets show no amounts. The lock needs a passcode set on your iPhone. iOS does the check; the app only learns whether it succeeded.
How do I add a widget?
- Touch and hold the Home Screen, then tap Edit › Add Widget.
- Search for CalcOwlator and pick Left this month, Due soon or Goal. Some sizes also fit the Lock Screen.
Left this month shows your pinned list’s total, or the list you used last, so pin your budget (touch and hold it on the Lists screen › Pin to top). With the Face ID lock on, widgets hide amounts.
I’m not getting reminders.
Check that notifications are allowed for CalcOwlator in your iPhone’s Settings, that Reminders is on in the app’s Settings, and that the row has a due date (or the card has a payment day). Reminders stop once you tick the row as paid.
Why doesn’t an account’s balance change?
Balances follow rows once they’re ticked, meaning the money has actually moved. Open the account to see what’s still planned, or tick the row in its list.
Does CalcOwlator connect to my bank?
No. Accounts hold only what you type in, which keeps everything private and on your phone.
Can I get back a list I deleted?
Not from inside the app. If you exported a backup before deleting it, restoring that backup brings it back. To get a list out of the way without losing it, use Archive instead; archived lists can be restored at any time.
How do I get Pro back on a new phone?
Open the app’s Settings and tap Restore purchases, signed in with the same Apple Account you bought Pro with.
How do I cancel my subscription?
On your iPhone, open Settings › your name › Subscriptions › CalcOwlator Pro. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid the next renewal. Pro stays on until the end of the period you’ve paid for, and nothing you made is ever locked: you keep every list, and only adding more than the free limits asks you to upgrade.
How do I ask for a refund?
Purchases are made through Apple, so refunds are handled by Apple. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Is there an iPad version?
CalcOwlator 1.0 is made for iPhone. iPads that can run iPhone apps from the App Store can run it at iPhone size.
